The International Max Planck Research School in Chemical and Molecular Biology (IMPRS-CMB) is a joint PhD Program between the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, the Technical University Dortmund, the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen. All four institutes are located in the Ruhr Metropolitan Area of Germany, an extremely vibrant and culturally interconnected region.
The IMPRS-CMB provides an amazing environment for young, talented and ambitious scientists to start an academic career in the field of life sciences.
As a graduate student, you will join a top-level research group and you will have the chance to carry out an exciting and novel project with access to state-of-the-art facilities and world class experts.
The goal of the IMPRS-CMB is to support students in their projects by providing the tools for them to learn experimental methods, as well as rigorous scientific thinking and scientific communication.

Company activities:

The IMPRS-CMB curriculum comprises the following activities:
• Seminar series of internationally renowned scientists
• Students seminars series
• An annual scientific retreat
• A bi-annual international symposium (organized by students)
• Practical and theoretical workshops (organized on campus by faculty members)
• Evening educational lectures
• Workshops to develop writing and communications skills
• Career Development Events
In addition, the IMPRS-CMB assigns to each student a travel budget to attend scientific meetings and conferences and any further training not available on campus.

We are looking for

We encourage the application of highly talented and motivated PhD candidates of all nationalities with a background in

MOLECULAR and CELL BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, BIOPHYSICS, APPLIED and THEORETICAL PHYSICS, MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY, CHEMICAL BIOLOGY, STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY, SYSTEMS BIOLOGY and related fields.

The scientific questions, that as a School we are interested in, are often very complex and require a combination of expertise. For this reason, we value interdisciplinarity and we actively search for students with backgrounds in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science or Engineering that are willing to work hand in hand with Biologists.
As a Biologist, this is also the place for you: you will be encouraged to tackle questions using a variety of approaches for which you will find training and support on site. Projects are truly interdisciplinary because faculty with different backgrounds closely collaborate.

We expect excellent academic scores, prior research experience but most importantly commitment and enthusiasm to face the many challenges of a PhD project.
