The number of PhD graduates is rising. Labour market data show that PhD holders have good career prospects. Although only 5-10% of all PhDs have access to a tenure track position, abandoning the academic dream is not so easy. In general researchers have limited knowledge about career options outside of academia. For PhDs ascertaining if their skillset matches the required skills in job advertisements can be a big challenge. Lucia Smit was born in the Netherlands and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration in 1992 and a Master of Arts Degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Utrecht in 1994. In 2010 she gained a doctoral degree in Sociology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, for her dissertation on the careers of doctorate holders working outside academia.
