At the Dutch Medicines Days 2026, held on 7 and 8 October at CORPUS in Leiden, Professor Henk-Jan Guchelaar of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) received the first FIGON Douwe D. Breimer Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award. The award recognises his significant contributions to pharmaceutical sciences in the Netherlands and his commitment to advancing the field and its scientific community.

Formerly known as the FIGON Erepenning, the award honours outstanding scientific achievements and the lasting contributions of individuals who have helped shape pharmaceutical sciences in the Netherlands. Its new name pays tribute to Professor Douwe D. Breimer, a prominent figure in Dutch pharmaceutical research, whose work has had a lasting influence on the development of the discipline.
Douwe D. Breimer is internationally recognised for his contributions to pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences. A professor of pharmacology at Leiden University, he played a central role in strengthening pharmaceutical research and education in the Netherlands. He later served as Rector Magnificus and President of the Executive Board of Leiden University, contributing to the university's academic development and international standing.
Throughout his career, Breimer has been an influential advocate for scientific collaboration and the advancement of pharmaceutical research. Naming the award after him acknowledges not only his scientific achievements but also his broader contribution to the research community.
The presentation of the first award under its new name was therefore particularly fitting, with Douwe Breimer himself handing the award to Henk-Jan Guchelaar.
Henk-Jan Guchelaar's recognition highlights his significant contributions to Dutch pharmaceutical sciences. Based at Leiden University Medical Center, his work has helped advance the field and strengthen the connection between pharmaceutical research and its wider scientific community.
The award ceremony also provided an opportunity to reflect on the nature of scientific progress. Henk-Jan’s acceptance speech highlighted how serendipity can move science forward, the importance of learning from failure, and why asking the right research questions is essential to scientific progress.
These reflections captured an important aspect of pharmaceutical science: progress depends not only on expertise and innovation, but also on curiosity, perseverance and the willingness to learn throughout the research process.
The presentation of the first FIGON Douwe D. Breimer Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award marked a special moment during Dutch Medicines Days 2026. By recognising Henk-Jan Guchelaar, the award celebrates a career of scientific contribution while reinforcing the importance of the people and collaborations that drive the field forward.
