"AI in Healthcare: Tackling the 'Black Box' Challenge and Improving Drug Safety"

The article from the Amsterdam Economic Board discusses the challenges and developments in the adoption of AI in healthcare. Bart de Vries, a technical doctor and Ph.D. candidate, notes that while deep learning has proven effective in diagnosing diseases, its 'black box' nature makes medical professionals hesitant to rely on it. This has led to the development of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), although current methods are not yet optimized for medical imaging. Joanna Klopotowska, an assistant professor, highlights the issue of adverse drug events (ADEs), which are significant yet preventable causes of injury in healthcare systems, emphasizing the need for better monitoring and documentation.
